Roofing in the UK

When it comes to roofing in the UK, we have experienced many different eras in terms of construction style and material usage. While you can’t deny the functionality and elegance of modern roofing, there are so many different roofing options to choose from. Perhaps you are looking for a rustic style with more authentic appeal, or maybe you are drawn to a certain type of tile. Whatever your preference, there is something out there for everyone and every home. In this blog, your roofer Newton Aycliffe will be discussing some of the most popular roofing styles from throughout the ages here in the UK.

Clay Roofs

Historical evidence suggests that the Romans were the first to introduce clay tiles to the British in 100 BC. Natives were shown how to get the clay soil from rivers, mould it, shape it, and bake it in a kiln to produce well-shaped, compact, and durable tiles. The opinion of our roofer Newton Aycliffe is that this was such an impressive creation.

Thatch Roofs

Thatching was the earliest form of roofing found in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, consisting of natural materials that were readily and easily available from the environment such as grass, reeds, and leaves. They would be joined or twined together to form a roof structure. A thatched roof is certainly a marvel as far as our team of roofer Newton Aycliffe are concerned.

Concrete Roofs

First introduced in the 1920s, concrete was stronger and easier to produce from anywhere, and provided uniform results. Pundits weren’t initially accepting of this new roofing style because they believed it was too heavy, uninteresting, and lacked elegance. It wasn’t until after the Second World War that it made a comeback! As a roofer Newton Aycliffe, we loved the ingenuity of this style.
